Meet the Musicians . . .

Diane Phoenix-Neal, viola

Violist Diane Phoenix-Neal performs regularly as a collaborative chamber musician and as a soloist, in addition to her roles as an educator and clinician. Her performances have taken her to concert stages worldwide, including China, North Africa and more recently to music festivals in Brazil and to Australia to perform for the International Viola Congress in 2007. Highlights of her chamber music and solo recitals include performances at Carnegie Hall and at Kennedy Center (New York String Orchestra), at Salle Pleyel in Paris, at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, and at the music festivals of Banff and Evian.

She holds degrees from the North Carolina School of the Arts, the Juilliard School, and UNC Greensboro. Her mentors include Sally Peck, William Lincer, Paul Doktor, Joel Smirnoff and the Amadeus Quartet. As a student, she served as principal violist of the Juilliard Orchestra and was invited to perform in the masterclasses of Atar Arad, Bruno Giuranna, John Graham and the Juilliard Quartet. More recently, she has collaborated in chamber music concerts with members of the Orion Quartet, with cellists Lynn Harell and Gary Hoffman, and with Dimitry Sitkovetsky in the chamber series Dimitry Sitkovetsky and Friends. Her solo appearances include performances with the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Gate City Camerata.

Violist of the Joachim Quartet (France) for seven years, Dr. Phoenix is the recipient of several awards, including finalist at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and a French Foreign Ministry grant award. She currently serves as principal violist with the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, and has served as principal and assistant principal violist of the Carolina Chamber Symphony and Greensboro Symphony. In addition she is a founding member of the Virginia based chamber ensemble Musica Harmonia, which will present its second concert tour to Brazil in 2008.

Dr. Phoenix has served on the faculties of Appalachian State University, and Bennett College for Women, and is currently an assistant professor of music at Fayetteville State? University.
